Hedging
Fast growing
Suggested varieties:
- Cupressocyparis Leylandii (green hedge, plant 75cm –90cm apart)
- Cupressocyparis Castlewellan (yellow hedge, plant 60cm - 75cm apart)
- Thuja Gelderland (green hedge, plant 90cm apart)
- Cupressocyparis Gold Rider (yellow hedge, plant 90cm apart)

Staking
Initial staking with 2.5cm x 2.5cm wooden stakes is advisable
Check the ties are not cutting into the tree as they grow. Take ties off when they have been outgrown
Trimming
Allow the hedge to become established to the height and width you require before you start trimming.
From then on, trim the sides and top yearly (July is best, but remember not to disturb any nesting birds) so that you are not trimming into the woody part of the hedge. Cupressocyparis varieties do not grow back from brown wood but Thuja varieties do. Leylandii and Castlewellan do not like to be trimmed more than once a year.
As these varieties are fast growing, it is important that they are planted in the right place. Avoid housing estates and small gardens.
Well suited to larger plots.
A commitment to yearly maintenance is essential.
Medium growing
Suggested varieties:
- Thuja Smargd (green hedge, plant 75cm - 80cm apart)
- Thuja Golden Smargd (yellow hedge, plant 60cm - 75cm apart)
- Thuja Starstruck (green with white variegation hedge, plant 60cm apart)
- Thuja Goldy (gold hedge, plant 60cm apart)
- Thuja Atrovirens (green hedge, plant 75cm apart)

If the location is windy, support may be needed initially until the plants are established
Trimming

Slow growing
Suggested varieties:- Taxus Common Yew (green hedge, plant 60cm - 75cm apart)
- Taxus Semper Aurea (yellow hedge, plant 60cm - 75cm apart)

Suitable for a small garden
Can be kept short and narrow with trimming
